A Pythonic Hackathon

Sagar is a friendly, command-line virtual assistant for CSE students and aspiring cybersecurity professionals. It understands simple commands to open trusted websites, play curated music links, and answer questions using an AI model. The goal is to make automation and safe, educational AI interactions easy to explore from the terminal.

What this project does (quick tour)

You can interact with Sagar in two modes:

• Single-line mode: type one command at a time.
• Multi-line mode: write a longer prompt across several lines, then submit it.

Commands are intentionally simple so anyone can learn the basics quickly:

• Open websites (e.g., Google, GitHub, Stack Overflow)
• Play songs from a small, customizable library
• Ask questions and get AI-generated answers

If you only read this README, you’ll know how to install, configure, run, and customize everything.

Installation (Windows + PowerShell)

1. Clone and enter the project

2. Create and activate a virtual environment

python -m venv .venv
. .\.venv\Scripts\Activate.ps1
# If activation is blocked, run once in this session:

3. Install dependencies

pip install -r requirements.txt

4. Add your API key

Temporary (current session only):

$env:GROQ_API_KEY = "your_real_key"
Verify:
echo $env:GROQ_API_KEY

Optional: create a .env file (recommended)

GROQ_API_KEY=your_real_key
GROQ_MODEL=llama-3.3-70b-versatile

You can also copy from .env.example and fill in your key.

5. Set an environment variable GROQ_MODEL

  $env:GROQ_MODEL = "llama-3.3-70b-versatile"
  Verify:
  echo $env:GROQ_MODEL

If the key is missing, the app will exit with a clear error.

Usage

Single-Line Input

Run main_single-line.py to issue commands one at a time:

python main_single-line.py

Or install the package and run the CLI entrypoint:

pip install -e .
sagar

Example input:

Run main_multiple-line.py to input commands across multiple lines:

python main_multiple-line.py

Or use the CLI entrypoint:

sagar-multi

Features in detail

1) Website launcher

The assistant maps friendly phrases like open google to real URLs. When you enter a matching command, it opens your default browser.

2) Music library

Songs are stored in a dictionary and matched by a normalized, lowercase key. That means play StarBoy, play starboy, and play starboy all work.

3) AI chat

If a command doesn’t match a built-in rule, Sagar sends it to the AI model and returns the response. It also keeps a short in-memory context so the conversation feels continuous during a session.

4) Safety and learning focus

The system prompt steers the AI to be concise, professional, and safety-aware. If a request is unsafe, it should refuse and provide a safer alternative.

Customization

You can add more websites or music links in the url_map and musicLibraries.musicLinks dictionary, respectively. Note: song keys are normalized to lowercase for easy matching.

Common customization ideas:

• Add your favorite websites to url_map.
• Add songs or playlists to musicLibraries.musicLinks.
• Change the assistant’s tone by editing the system prompt.

Adjusting System Prompts

Inside the scripts the initial messages list contains a system prompt (assistant persona + teaching focus). Modify it to change the assistant’s tone.

Persisting Conversation (Future Idea)

Currently context resets each run. You could persist context to a JSON file after each response and load it on startup. Ask if you'd like a helper for that.

Troubleshooting

“GROQ_API_KEY is not set”

Set the environment variable or create a .env file. See the Installation section for exact commands.

The browser does not open

Your OS might block automated browser launches. Try running a command manually or ensure a default browser is configured.

Model errors or timeouts

The app tries fallback models. If issues persist, check your API key and network connection.
