1. Classes & Objects

The Analogy

A class is an architectural blueprint. An object is the actual building constructed from that blueprint. You can build many buildings from one blueprint — each is independent.

The ERP Connection

In an ERP, an Invoice class describes what every invoice looks like. Each actual invoice (Invoice #1001, #1002) is a separate object in memory.

// ❌ BAD — everything crammed together, no structure
// Just using variables floating around

🔑 Key Points

A class defines what an object is (structure) and what it can do (behavior)
Each object has its own copy of instance data
Constructors ensure an object is valid from birth — never create an object in an inconsistent state

2. Encapsulation

The Analogy

Think of an ATM (Bank machine). You interact with it through buttons and a screen. You cannot reach inside and change the bank balance directly. The internal mechanics are hidden and protected. You can only do what the machine allows.

The Core Idea

Encapsulation = hiding internal state + exposing controlled access. This protects your object from being put into an invalid state by outside code.

🔑 Key Points

Make fields private, expose only what's needed
Use private set or init on properties when external mutation is dangerous
Expose behavior (methods) rather than raw data
The object is responsible for keeping itself valid

3. Abstraction

The Analogy

When you drive a car, you use the steering wheel, accelerator, and brakes. You don't need to know how the engine combustion works, how the gearbox transfers torque, or how ABS calculates brake pressure. The complexity is hidden behind a simple interface. That's abstraction.

The Core Idea

Abstraction = showing what something does, hiding how it does it.

🔑 Key Points

Define what through interfaces and public methods
Hide how in private methods and implementations
Callers should work with the simplest possible surface
Abstraction makes your code easier to test, replace, and understand

4. Inheritance

The Analogy

Every company has employees. But a Manager is an employee who can also approve budgets. A Contractor is an employee who is paid differently. They share the core "employee" identity but have unique behaviors. The family tree.

The Core Idea

Inheritance = a child class gets everything the parent has and can add or modify behavior.
